Backgrounds are what is behind the writing on the page. They can be nothing, which is just a plain white color. They can be any one of the 16.7 million different colors available in HTML coding. The more popular method I have noticed on MySpace is to use an image as a background. With the image you have two options of the background being stationary, or rolling with the page as it scrolls. One last thought about background images is that if they are smaller than the width of the page, they are repeated as they cross the page, which can create interesting effects.

Layouts are the structure of the entire page, which includes background choices and much much more. So background is a subset of layout.

They actually are not the same thing. The background is just that, a background. Layouts include a background, but it's more than that. It includes many different features that you would like your myspace to have such as contact table, extended network banner. It also includes the font color, the way everything is setup. So as you see, they're not the same.
I think they mean layouts as to the entire profile: the background, add me%26amp; message me box, and the back ground is just the background i guess
